Meteorologist Steve Caparotta is the Founder and President of CapWeather Consulting and CapWeather.com. Caparotta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from the University of South Alabama in 1998, where he graduated cum laude. He was also honored with the Coastal Weather Research Center award as the top graduating senior in meteorology. While in college, Steve spent his summers interning at WVUE-TV in New Orleans, learning the broadcast side of meteorology. Close-calls with a few hurricanes, along with covering a couple of big flooding events, were enough to convince him to pursue a career in TV. Caparotta landed his first job as a broadcast meteorologist at KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, LA in 1999. After two years there, he moved to a much bigger television market, accepting a position with WIS-TV in Columbia, SC. Feeling the draw of home, Steve accepted a job with his current employer, WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, LA, in 2003. Since landing in Baton Rouge, Steve has successfully completed a M.S. in Geography/Climatology at LSU. He finished his master's degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA. His thesis, relating something known as the Madden-Julian Oscillation to hurricane frequencies, can be seen here. Caparotta holds the American Meteorological Society's Television Seal of Approval. He also has received several Associated Press Awards for his broadcast work, including production of an annual Hurricane Special, coverage of the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans, and his evening weathercasts. |
